Promising technologies for wet biomass waste valorization

EUBIA hosted the workshop on wet biomass waste valorization which took place on the 18th of June, within the framework of the European Sustainable Energy Week. The Event focused on the findings and achievements made within the context of two EU funded projects in which EUBIA participates, Newapp and ORION. Both projects have as their goal the valorization of wet biomass wastes produced from various sectors such as fishing, food, HORECA, etc.. By defining new value chains and developing innovative technologic solutions (hydro thermal carbonization and small scale anaerobic digestion) these projects have been able to turn these wastes into different types of resources to be used as energy, fertilizers, etc.

Regarding ORION, Julie Maguire from the Irish Research Centre DOMMRS and Mark Mccormick from the Western Switzerland Applied Sciences Centre, explained the technical features of the device designed for the valorization of organic wastes, and the opportunities that such a technology would open for small companies which could manage their own organic wastes by themselves. Moreover, Belén Fernández from IRTA described the functioning of the device and how it can be addapted to the needs of SMEs.

The second session focused on Newapp and its findings. Andrea Salimbeni from EUBIA explained the process of hydrothermal carbonisation of wet biomass residues and the different applications that this kind of carbon can have such as biodiesel or electrodes. Moreover, Bárbara de Mena Pardo focused its presentation on the production of biochar and its use for sustainable soil conditioning.

The event was closed with a debate on the development of new value chains and technologies for the use of wet biomass wastes. The workshop gathered a varied audience of people, from academia to local authorities and consultancies which discussed the posible uses of these new technologies and their adaptability to their needs.
