A new start for the negotiations on fisheries subsidies

The WTO has announced the relaunch of negotiations on fisheries subsidies, to fight against overfishing and illegal practises. The decision was taken by Roberto Zapata Barradas, newly appointed Chair of the Negotiating Group on Rules. The objective is to secure a new agreement by 2019 and subsidies are estimated around €15 billion per year. According to FAO, overfishing affects 31% of global fish stocks and this trend could be reversed only through legally binding agreements.
